Republicans will gain control of the Senate, a key victory for Republicans who haven’t won a majority in the chamber since 2021, CNN projects.
Democrats’ slim majority in the Senate was already looking precarious, but Republican candidates flipping Senate seats in Ohio and West Virginia sealed a Republican victory. .
Republicans also still hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives, and it could take more than a week for the results to become official.
Senate race: Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska and Rep. John Curtis of Utah, both Republicans, will win the Senate race, CNN reported. Meanwhile, Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar was reelected in Minnesota.
House elections: Republicans will flip North Carolina’s three House seats, and CNN projects Republican candidates Brad Knott, Tim Moore, and Addison McDowell to win.
California Democrats Laura Friedman and Luz Rivas, Wisconsin Republican Tony Weed, and Minnesota Democrat Kelly Morrison are also expected to win their congressional races, CNN reports.
Governor’s race: Democrat Bob Ferguson will be Washington’s next governor, CNN reports. Meanwhile, Utah Governor Spencer Cox won re-election, making him the sixth consecutive Republican to serve as governor.
Ballot measure: Voters in Colorado and Arizona will approve measures that enshrine the right to abortion in their state constitutions, CNN Project reports.
The non-pregnant procedure remains legal in Colorado, but an amendment expected to pass would allow public funds to be used for abortions. Meanwhile, the approved plan would expand access to the procedure in Arizona, which currently bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. From now on, it will be allowed until the “period of fetal viability,” which doctors believe is about 22 to 24 weeks.
Eight states also plan to ban noncitizens from voting, even though it’s already illegal in federal elections, according to a CNN project.
