I went on a nine-day trip aboard the Scenic Spirit, a luxury river cruise that seats 68 people. The 344 square foot deluxe room I stayed in had a special area with glass partitions and lots of windows. I loved that it had a butler, multiple seating options, a large shower, and a walk-in closet.
Americans are getting pretty obsessed with cruises this year, especially huge ships that carry thousands of people and have as many restaurants and shops as small cities.
However, its vastness and lack of exclusivity may not suit all travelers. Take a luxury river cruise.
They are much smaller and more intimate than larger ships, often holding fewer than 150 passengers, and are usually much more expensive. An all-inclusive river cruise sailing can cost more than three times what you would pay for a basic cabin on a huge ship.
This year, I rode the Scenic Spirit, which seats up to 68 people. The nine-day cruise took us along the Mekong River through Vietnam and Cambodia. The trip then continued with a three-night overland tour of Siem Reap’s iconic temples.
Scenic is an all-inclusive line, so the price for this cruise and land tour includes lodging, onboard food and beverages, Wi-Fi, excursions, transportation, luggage handling, port fees, gratuities, and taxes.
Although this cruise was free, the sailing fee will be approximately $7,075. My 344 square foot deluxe cabin looked like this.
