President Obama criticized President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) for their efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
“If you ask Donald Trump what he would do to make health care more affordable, there is one answer: repeal the Affordable Care Act,” Obama said. said. “And he’s not alone. The other day, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said, “If Trump wins, Obamacare won’t exist.”
President Obama said their efforts failed because the law is working.
“Now neither of them can really explain why they want it to end, other than the fact that I did it,” Obama said.
Johnson told NBC News today that he denied wanting to repeal the Affordable Care Act, calling it a “disingenuous characterization” of his remarks.
“The audio and recordings make clear that I have not made any promises to repeal Obamacare and, in fact, acknowledge that this policy is ‘deeply ingrained’ in our health care system,” Johnson said. ” he said.
“Yet, House Republicans will always seek to reduce costs and improve the quality and availability of health care for all Americans. “Anyone who knows a loved one will understand why this is so important,” the speaker added.
“Repealing Obamacare is not a policy position of President Trump,” Trump campaign press secretary Caroline Levitt said in a statement tonight.
“As President Trump has said, he will improve our nation’s health care system by increasing transparency, promoting choice and competition, and expanding access to new, affordable health care and insurance options. “Kamala Harris destroyed our health care system, and President Trump will fix it,” Levitt said.
