Washington:
In an op-ed on Saturday, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris recalled her frequent visits to India as a child and her mother’s mission to cure cancer.
“My mother raised me and my sister to appreciate and respect our heritage. Almost every other year, we went to India for Diwali. , and spent time with Chitis,” Harris said. An editorial in The Jaggernaut, a South Asian online publication.
“And as Vice President, it is my honor to host Diwali at my home, the Vice Presidential Residence, to not only celebrate the holiday, but celebrate the rich history, culture, and heritage of the South Asian American diaspora. “It’s also about celebrating. We are united by a sense of common possibility and a belief in America’s promise,” she said.
In an op-ed published three days before the Nov. 5 general election, Harris wrote that her mother, Shyamala Harris, traveled alone across the world from India to the United States when she was 19 years old. “My mother had two goals in life: to raise her two daughters, my sister Maya, and me, and to cure breast cancer,” she wrote.
“When I was young and traveling in India, I visited my grandfather, PV Gopalan, in what was then called Madras. My grandfather was a retired civil servant. His morning routine was to “I went for a walk with some retired friends and listened to them talk about the importance of fighting for democracy and civil rights,” she wrote.
“Through these walks, I remember how my grandfather taught me lessons about what it meant not only to have a democracy, but to maintain a democracy. Those lessons first inspired me to enter the civil service. and those continue to guide me today as vice president and as a candidate for president of the United States,” Harris said.
She said she believes Americans want a president who works for all Americans. “And that’s been the story of my entire career,” he said.
“South Asian Americans are often neglected in our health care system, especially when it comes to heart health and diabetes. I will work with President Joe Biden to cap insulin prices for seniors at $35 and We reduced drug costs. I will protect the Affordable Care Act and the Affordable Care Act. Expand Medicare to cover home care for seniors. This is personal to me. , when my mother had cancer, I helped care for her and did everything I could to ease the burden of caregiving on your family,” she wrote.
“When it comes to fixing our broken immigration system, I reject the false choice between securing our borders and creating an orderly and humane immigration system. We can and will do both. The bipartisan border security bill I support will do that by reducing illegal border crossings through strict enforcement so that the lives of South Asians are not put at risk. “We will work with Democrats, Republicans and independents to ensure we uphold our proud heritage as a nation,” she said.
“This election also puts our country’s role in the world at stake, and I will ensure that we strengthen, not relinquish, our global leadership. As vice president, I will support our key partners in South Asia, including India, And unlike Trump, I will protect America’s security and ideals, even if I am a man who has become attached to a tyrant and whom national security officials have deemed “dangerous” and “unfit.” Never wavering,” she wrote.
“Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences if he returns to the White House will be extremely serious. Trump and his extremist allies will cut Social Security and Medicare. His economic policies. will raise inflation and cause a recession by mid-2025. In 2025, he plans to impose what I call a “Trump sales tax,” which will be a tax of at least 20%, maybe more. , which economists estimate will put a strain on American households. That’s an additional $4,000 per year,” Harris wrote.
