Amorim has signed a contract with the famous English club until June 2027 and will start his new role on November 11th.
Ruben Amorim has been appointed as Manchester United’s new manager, replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag.
The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, who won two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting Lisbon, has signed a contract with Old Trafford until 2027 and will join the club on November 11.
“Manchester United is pleased to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements,” the club announced on its website on Friday.
“After fulfilling his obligations to his current club, he will join until June 2027 with a club option for a further year.”
United described Amorim as “one of the most exciting and highly regarded young managers in European football”.
“His accolades as both player and manager include winning Portugal’s Primeira Liga twice with Sporting CP, the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.” stated in the statement.
Caretaker manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Amorim arrives at Old Trafford during the November international break.
Amorim’s first game in charge will be away to struggling side Ipswich on November 24th.
United sacked 10 Hugs on Monday after a 2-1 defeat at West Ham that left them languishing in 14th place in the Premier League with just three wins from nine games.
Amorim quickly emerged as the club’s top target, with Sporting issuing a statement to the Lisbon Stock Exchange earlier this week confirming that United were prepared to meet his €10 million ($11 million) release clause. Confirmed.
Amorim was asked about a possible transfer at a press conference before Sporting’s home league match against Estrela on Friday, but he remained mum.
“This is a negotiation between two clubs,” he said on Thursday.
“It’s never easy. Even with the clause, it’s never easy and they have to talk.”
Until Wednesday’s 5-2 win over Leicester in the League Cup fourth round, United had won just one of their previous eight games in all competitions.
