The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series on Wednesday.
The Dodgers defeated the Yankees 7-6 in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium, winning the World Series for the second time in the past five years.
After a historic season that included a home run record, Freddie Freeman was named the Most Valuable Player of the series.
While enduring an ankle injury during the National League Championship Series in September, Freeman hit the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.
After rounding the bases following the grand slam, Freeman ran to his father. “Ever since I can remember, my dad has had me take batting practice. I owe my swing to him, my approach to him, and everything I am to him,” Freeman said. He said this in an interview after the match.
“If he didn’t let me take batting practice, if he didn’t love the game of baseball, I wouldn’t be here playing this game,” he said. “So it’s a Fred Freeman moment.”
Adding to the list of records broken during the Fall Classic, the Dodgers became the first team to come back from five runs or more to win the World Series.
Mookie Betts, Freeman, and Teoscar Hernandez managed to rally the Yankees from a five-run lead and tie the game in the fifth inning.
Wednesday’s win was the Dodgers’ eighth title in franchise history, the first since 2020 when the season was shortened due to COVID-19, and the first in a full season since 1988.
