Washington:
U.S. health officials announced Wednesday that shredded onions used at McDonald’s caused an E. coli outbreak that sickened 90 people.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, “Freshly sliced onions served with Quarter Pounders and other McDonald’s menu items are the likely cause of this outbreak.”
These particular onions were supplied by Taylor Farms, which issued a voluntary recall. McDonald’s also pulled onions.
Restaurants in more than a dozen U.S. states temporarily removed hamburgers from their menus this month due to outbreaks linked to them.
There are now 90 people infected, 27 of whom are hospitalized and one elderly man from Colorado has died.
McDonald’s announced on Sunday that it would resume selling its Quarter Pounder hamburger after testing negative for E. coli.
E. coli causes stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting that lasts three to four days. Most people recover without the need for treatment, but some develop complications.
