The Chancellor chose not to make any changes to fuel tax, but there was speculation that any changes would lead to higher petrol prices for motorists across the UK.
Mr Reeves said: “Maintaining the 5p cut and refreezing fuel duty will cost more than £3 billion next year. We must be frank with the House at a time when the public finances are in such dire straits. “But it’s quite a promise.”
“In these difficult circumstances, I have concluded that increasing fuel tax is the wrong choice for working people, even though the cost of living remains high. ,” she added.
“So today I have decided to freeze fuel duty for next year and will maintain the 5p reduction for another year. There will be no tax increase at the pump next year.”
Simon Williams, head of the RAC motoring organization, said motorists would breathe a “huge sigh of relief”.
“Eight out of 10 drivers say they rely on their car for the transportation they need to get around, but 70% of commuters living in rural areas say they have no viable option other than a car to get to work. “We don’t have the means,” he said. .
“It is also worth remembering that even as of today, 56% of the total value of a liter of petrol is already levied as taxes and value-added tax in the form of fuel tax,” he added.
