I’ve written quite a few articles on natural hair care over the years. Recipes for nourishing conditioners, herbal hair treatments, and more for healthier hair. But healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. This hair growth oil helps nourish the scalp and is perfect for those who suffer from hair loss or breakage.
I originally wrote this recipe for men who notice thinning hair as they age. However, many women are also looking for hair products to address hair health. Over-styling, tight hairstyles (such as tight braids), hot styling tools, thyroid problems, male pattern baldness, and pregnancy can all contribute to hair loss.
More than half of women experience hair loss at least once. Some people may not have thinning hair but would like to grow their hair longer.
After I became pregnant, I started experimenting with natural ways to encourage hair regrowth on my own. I have found that this hair growth oil is equally effective for men who want to avoid hair loss. No matter who you are, if you notice that your hair isn’t as full as it used to be, the good news is that there are natural options.
promotes healthy hair growth
As with everything else, the foundation of healthy hair is a healthy diet. Nutrients like biotin and collagen help keep all hair types healthy and strong. Experts recommend focusing on B vitamins, vitamin C (for collagen production), omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and vitamin A.
If you are iron deficient, that can also play a role. Iron is necessary for healthy blood flow to the hair follicles. I try to get as many nutrients as possible from whole foods, and supplements can fill in the gaps. Adequate nutrition can also reduce hair breakage, receding hairline, and split ends.
Hydration and minerals are also very important. If you notice dry hair, frizz, or dry scalp, you may need to drink more water. You can read my hydrating mineral drink recipe here.
Oil treatment for hair growth
If your scalp needs some extra TLC, natural scalp treatments can help. There are various natural oils that promote quick and easy hair growth. Popular options include almond oil, argan oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. For people with hair loss, vitamin E reduces oxidative damage to the scalp and promotes hair growth.
There are many options, but this recipe uses:
Castor oil – Used for detox in treatments such as castor oil packs. I also used it to make my hair and eyelashes thicker/longer. It not only prevents hair loss but also promotes hair growth. I used it twice a week and my hair grew 1.5 inches in a month. Black Seed Oil – Black seed oil has many benefits, especially for hair growth. It can help treat some fungal infections that lead to hair loss, and may even help avoid hair thinning in the first place. Can be used internally or topically. Try a small amount on the skin on the inside of your arm first before using on a larger area. Black seed oil may be irritating to some people. Rosemary Oil – Well known for its ability to stimulate hair growth, rosemary is often added to hair growth treatments and shampoos. Adding a small amount adds a pleasant aroma and enhances the effectiveness of recipes by reducing inflammation and dandruff. Lavender essential oil – Also great for skin health and hair growth. The scent of black cumin seeds and rosemary mellows and creates a refreshing scent.
Tea tree and peppermint oils are also useful, but I personally did not use them in the recipe. You can also add a few drops of tea tree if you want to reduce dandruff, oily scalp, or fungal problems. Peppermint stimulates the scalp and increases blood flow for hair growth.
Optional olive oil and cayenne oil
Cayenne promotes blood circulation and is a folk remedy for hair loss and muscle pain. If you want to incorporate it into your hair growth oil, it is easy to inject. Here’s what you need:
Add the ingredients to the top of the double burner and let it infuse for about an hour. You can also do solar injections. Simply place cayenne pepper and oil in a glass jar and leave it in the sun for a few days. Strain the cayenne pepper and reserve the oil to use in your hair growth oil recipe.
Natural hair growth oil recipe
Contains oils that promote hair growth, such as castor oil, black cumin seed, rosemary, and lavender.
Yield: 3 oz.
Author: Katie Wells
Mix all ingredients in a dark glass jar. You can also use a brown dropper bottle, but I reuse the black cumin seed bottle. Contains special Miron glass that protects oil from spoilage for years.
Wet your hair and massage 10 to 30 drops (or 1/2 to 1 teaspoon) into your scalp.
Leave it on for an hour or overnight and wash it off. To prevent oil stains, we recommend using it at night and sleeping with a towel on your pillow.
Use once a week or as needed to promote hair growth.
Test the oil on a small area on the inside of your arm before using it all over your scalp. Do not use if it causes any reaction or sensitivity. Black cumin seed oil irritates the skin of a few people with sensitive skin.
