IOWA CITY — Kaleb Johnson rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns, and backup quarterback Brendan Sullivan had another rushing touchdown in Iowa State’s 40-14 win over Northwestern on Saturday. Added.
The Hawkeyes (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) took control with 28 third-quarter points behind Johnson and Sullivan.
“It was really great to go out there and play like we did in the third quarter,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “When you get 28 points, life gets easier.”
“That third quarter was great,” Sullivan said. “It was fun to be a part of it.”
Johnson, who ranks second in the nation in rushing yards per game and yards rushing, scored a 26-yard touchdown run late in the first half to give the Hawkeyes a 12-7 lead at halftime. He added a 41-yard touchdown run in the third to put Iowa ahead 33-7, followed by a 25-yard touchdown run later in the quarter.
This was Johnson’s sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season and he has 16 rushing touchdowns this season.
Johnson was held to 30 yards on eight carries in the first half, but gained 79 yards on six carries in the third quarter.
“We just persisted and persisted,” Johnson said. “Finally the big run happened and I got some momentum and just kept going.”
Sullivan, who appeared in 13 games and started eight in two seasons at Northwestern before transferring to Iowa last spring, entered the game at 9:25 of the second quarter, replacing starter Cade McNamara. did. Sullivan threw for 79 yards and had 41 yards rushing, including a 6-yard touchdown run that set up the Hawkeyes’ third-quarter score.
“It was weird watching film all week and knowing exactly who all of them were,” Sullivan said of playing against his former teammates. “It feels like high school when you know exactly who you’re going to play against.”
Sullivan enjoyed playing against his former team, which was evident as he occasionally exchanged words with the Wildcats during the game.
“I have nothing but respect for them,” Sullivan said. “I was just enjoying the game.”
Ferentz said he had planned to use Sullivan more often this week, but decided to make the change after McNamara threw an interception.
Asked if Sullivan would be a “permanent” starter, Ferentz said, “We’ll have to wait and see. ‘Permanent’ is a bit of a strong word.”
In the third quarter, Caden Wetchen returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown.
Northwestern (3-5, 1-4) had an 85-yard interception return by Terran Johnson in the second quarter and a 72-yard punt return by Drew Wagner for a touchdown in the fourth.
“We performed poorly in all three phases,” Northwestern coach David Brown said. “That was an embarrassing loss, an embarrassing performance, an embarrassing second half.”
big picture
Northwestern: The Wildcats had just 163 yards of offense and entered the game ranked 129th nationally in total offense and 119th in scoring offense. Northwestern’s starting field position averaged 21, and after entering Iowa territory on its first drive, it did not cross midfield again until midway through the fourth quarter. When asked what he thought was the problem with the offense, Brown said, “Everywhere.”
Iowa State: Sullivan’s appearance has reinvigorated the Hawkeyes’ offense. His running ability was on display with a 40-yard pass to tight end Johnny Pascucci, which allowed Sullivan to run down the field and throw a key block. The Hawkeyes’ defense, which struggled in last Saturday’s 32-20 loss to Michigan State, responded with its best effort of the season.
