The Weir Red Riders defeated the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights 1-0 on the pitch at East Wheeling Turf Field on Saturday to claim the Class A-AA Region 1, Section 1 championship.
The only goal of the game was scored by Weir’s Kaylin Engle in the 43rd minute. There weren’t many goals or even close calls in the first half, but Engle’s kick sailed past the Central keeper, who ran wide of the goal, and slowly went between the posts, scoring just before the Maroon Knight defender fell against the post. This was Weir’s second and final shot on goal of the game. Wheeling Central had three shots on goal throughout the game, but dominated possession for much of the game and attempted more shots on target Saturday.
Weir keeper Rayna Hoover made two saves, as did Wheeling Central keeper Vera Fitzsimmons.
Wheeling Central’s season ended with a record of 18 wins, 3 losses, and 1 record. They defeated Tyler 10-0 in the sectional semifinals on Oct. 23. The Red Riders improved to 13-3-4 and will face the East Fairmont Bees (21-1) in the district tournament. The Bees defeated Hampshire 10-0 on Saturday.
