An official with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees said the lack of humanity witnessed in northern Gaza was “incomprehensible”.
Sam Rose said it was “essentially impossible” for UNRWA to provide any assistance to civilians trapped in the northern enclave amid Israel’s constant military activity.
Mr. Rose explains Jabaria’s situation. Bakeries ran out of flour, the only food remaining in the area, and all eight wells in the area went dry.
“We don’t think this conflict can get any worse, but sadly it could plummet even further,” he told Sky News.
“The lack of humanity we see in northern Gaza is frankly incomprehensible, as is the world’s inability to do anything about it.”
The situation could worsen if polio vaccines are not available to all residents of northern Gaza, Rose said.
The World Health Organization has vaccinated more than 500,000 Palestinian children, but has been forced to postpone the final round of its polio vaccination campaign due to escalating violence in northern Gaza.
The final phase of the vaccine drive, aimed at immunizing 119,279 children across northern Gaza, was dependent on a humanitarian moratorium to ensure completion.
Failure to complete the final stage could jeopardize the entire campaign.
“If only a portion of the population has been vaccinated against live polio, if that vaccine is flushed into the water supply, other unvaccinated children may pick it up,” Rose said. added.
“Over time, this disease mutates, and we are dealing with a completely new type of this disease that no one in Gaza has been vaccinated against.”
