Donald Trump visited a McDonald’s franchise in Pennsylvania on Sunday, working the drive-thru and manning fryers while answering questions from reporters. The former president boasted about his time in office and sarcastically wished Kamala Harris a happy 60th birthday. “Maybe I should buy her some fries,” Trump said.
The trip was aimed at attacking Harris, an opponent who worked at a fast-food chain during her college days. Trump has frequently questioned that experience without providing evidence.
Harris celebrated her birthday at two churches in Georgia and continued to promote her “Soul at the Vote” campaign, which reaches out to black voters through religious organizations.
Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz visited churches in Michigan and Minnesota, and Donald Trump and supporter Elon Musk held separate town halls in Pennsylvania. Both campaigns are focused on drumming up support from voters in battleground states 16 days before the election, when polls suggest the situation remains tight.
Here’s what else happened Sunday.
Kamala Harris Election News
Kamala Harris celebrated her 60th birthday by visiting two community churches in Georgia. The first congregation sang Happy Birthday as Harris took the stage, and on the second visit, Stevie Wonder joined Harris in singing Bob Marley’s Salvation Song.
Harris spoke to the congregation at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta about how her early religious experiences in Oakland, California, influenced her politics. Citing the parable of the Good Samaritan from the Gospel of Luke, the vice president advocated a policy that values compassion. “What kind of country do we want to live in? A country of chaos, fear, and hatred, or a country of freedom, compassion, and justice? …When we meet our brothers and sisters in need, we must be the ones to act with kindness. Let us see our stranger, our neighbor, as the Samaritan did.”
Walz, who attended a church service in Saginaw, Michigan, criticized President Trump for selling branded Bibles. “In our faith, we understand that the Bible is meant to be read, followed, and absorbed. It’s not something we brand and sell for $59,” Waltz said. It’s pretty unpleasant,” he told the audience.
Harris has no plans to campaign with Joe Biden ahead of the election. The decision was a mutual decision by the anonymous Harris campaign, a White House official told NBC News. The president will instead use his long-standing political relationships to support Harris. “The most important role he can play is to fulfill his duties as president,” a White House official said.
In a one-on-one interview with the Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC’s PoliticsNation in Atlanta, Harris talked about the latest polling that suggests she is losing support from black men. “This narrative about how we receive support from Black men doesn’t play out in reality,” she said. “We have to get everyone’s vote, regardless of race or gender.”
Donald Trump Presidential Election News
President Trump doubled down on his dangerous rhetoric labeling Democrats the “enemy from within” in an interview with Howard Kurtz on Fox News on Sunday. “The lunatics of the radical left…the enemy from within…are very easily dealt with by the National Guard if necessary, or by the military if really necessary,” the former president said, before specifically criticizing Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff. It should be done.” Similar comments made by Trump in the past few weeks have raised concerns, raising fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he becomes president again.
In the same interview with Fox News, President Trump reiterated his statement that the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol was a “day of love.” When asked if he was comfortable calling January 6 a “day of love,” Trump said, “They came to protest a fraudulent election…They have a right to protest in this country.” Ta. He previously reiterated comments he made recently at Miami City Hall, saying “there was beauty and love.”
President Trump held a town hall in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, this weekend, marking his second rally in the battleground state. Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele served as moderator while President Trump took questions from the audience. Asked if he would protect Social Security and Medicare benefits, President Trump said his priorities include “not taxing Social Security for the elderly, which is a big deal…not taxing tips (and) overtime.” “Not to tax people’s income.”
Elsewhere in the campaign
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of Company X, hosted a town hall in Pittsburgh in support of Trump. In a short speech, Musk repeated false and fear-mongering claims and told attendees that “the Constitution is literally under attack.” Musk also spoke about his goal to speed up government processes and his promised role as “cost-cutting secretary” in the second Trump administration. “I’d like to say it’s hard work, but it’s not,” he says.
Musk also issued a second check for $1 million to signers of a petition urging Republicans in key states to register to vote. The tech mogul, worth an estimated $247 billion, pledged Saturday to give away $1 million a day to anyone who signs a petition in support of the First and Second Amendments.
