Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s summer residence in the town of Caesarea was hit by a drone attack, a spokesman said.
Israel launched several airstrikes on Beirut’s southern outskirts after Lebanese militant group Hezbollah fired a volley of rockets into northern Israel with a single drone, targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s summer home.
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s spokesman said one of three drones launched from Lebanon on Saturday struck his residence in the town of Caesarea, adding that Netanyahu was not nearby and there were no casualties. He added that there was not.
The Israeli military said two other drones were also intercepted, adding that more than 100 rockets were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel, killing one person and wounding at least 13 others.
“The Iranian agents who tried to assassinate me and my wife today made a terrible mistake,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said.
Hezbollah, an Iranian ally, has been engaged in a gunfight with Israel since October last year. Saturday’s attack came a day after the group announced it was entering a new phase of fighting.
Hezbollah did not claim responsibility for the Caesarea drone attack, but said it had carried out several rocket attacks against northern and central Israel.
Al Jazeera’s Noor Odeh, reporting from Amman, Jordan, said the drone attack would cause concern for Israeli security officials.
“The fact that the drone was able to travel 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the Lebanese border undetected, did not sound a siren, and hit its intended target raises great concern for Israel and its security services. Ta.”
She said “a large number of rockets” from Lebanon launched a drone attack on Prime Minister Netanyahu’s home as a decoy. He said sirens were sounded throughout northern Israel, including the cities of Galilee and Haifa.
Haifa is the largest city in northern Israel and is considered a strategic port city with a population of 300,000 and the headquarters of the Navy.
“The sirens sounded shortly after we received confirmation that the drone strike had indeed succeeded in targeting the home of the Israeli prime minister in Caesarea,” Odeh said.
Israeli attack
Late Saturday, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported that four people were killed and 13 injured in an Israeli airstrike on an apartment building in the town of Baal-Ulu, in the eastern West Bekaa region.
According to Lebanese state media, Israeli airstrikes also occurred on the southern outskirts of Beirut, marking the first attack in the area in three days.
AFP footage showed smoke billowing across the area less than an hour after Israeli forces ordered residents to evacuate.
Lebanon’s state news agency reported two Israeli attacks on a building in the Haret Lake area, adding that Israeli warplanes later attacked the al-Umara area near Shweifat.
The Israeli military said it had attacked Hezbollah targets.
On September 23, Israel launched an intense air campaign into Lebanon, followed by ground troops following a nearly year-long cross-border firefight with Hezbollah over the Gaza war.
At least 2,448 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since October 2023, according to Lebanese health authorities.
