Cowanesque Valley in North Penn Mansfield
On Saturday night, CV and North Penn Mansfield are putting the spotlight on District 4. Last year, North Penn Mansfield performed well, with a last-minute attack and a thrilling 20-14 victory.
CV (3-5) has won its second straight and is one or two away from winning its third straight, building a 10-point lead against South Williamsport in Week 6. Quarterback Graham Hess led the way with over 1,000 passing yards last week. The team continued its rush by topping 100 yards passing and rushing in each of its final two games. Dave Hess also had a strong season, and Jevon Ake also scored in four different games and intercepted four passes.
Sophomore linebacker Keegan Lane is nearing a 1,000-yard season and is one of the top tacklers in the area. Freshman Stevie Olson had four sacks, including one in back-to-back games.
North Penn vs. Mansfield (2-6) faces Muncie and Troy teams that are a combined 15-1 over the past two weeks. The Panthers had some exciting games and rallied in the second half to defeat Athens on the road. Quarterback Cooper Shaw has a chance to reach 2,000 yards this season, and wide receiver Luke Krager leads the district with 1,057 yards.
Riley Oakes became a versatile weapon, running for and catching a touchdown for Muncy. George Valentine has averaged 6.3 tackles since returning from injury and George Perry has two sacks. The Panthers have allowed just 14 points in their two wins.
Sayre at Canton
Canton (4-4) may be getting back on track at the right time, with several key players back when it snapped a three-game losing streak and beat Wellsboro 46-34 last week. The Warriors did damage on the ground and through the air, scoring five total touchdowns, including quarterback Ben Fitch returning an interception for a score. Aydin Holcomb continued his big season, catching three passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
Holden Ward, returning from injury, added a different dimension to Canton’s offense, and Bailey Gardner also ran for 84 yards while adding an interception. Tonight could be a District 4 Class A playoff preview. With six teams eligible for the postseason, Canton is in fourth place and Sayre (1-7) is in fifth place and will play again in two weeks if the seeding remains the same.
Thayer has a dangerous passing tandem with Carter Green and Nick Pellicano. Green is 83 yards shy of 1,000 yards and Pellicano has caught eight touchdowns. He also returned three kickoffs for touchdowns.
Warrior Run in Central Columbia
Warrior Run (5-3) continued its losing streak against Loyalsock and Hughesville by a total of four points, including double overtime last week. Still, the Defenders are competing hard and still have a chance to win the second home playoff game in program history.
The Warrior Run enters fifth place in the standings tonight, with the top four teams hosting the games, but the Warrior Run wins the remaining two games and the Royalsocks face undefeated Shamokin or Montoursville. If we lose at least one, it will be held. The Defenders rallied from a 14-point deficit against Hughesville, put together a last-minute scoring drive and converted a two-point conversion with two seconds left to send the game into overtime, but fell a yard short in the second overtime.
Eli Butler is having a great all-around season. The senior led the team in tackles, lost tackles and rushing, and scored 13 four-way touchdowns. It boasts a total yardage of 1,150 yards. Wide receiver Sam Hall is second on the area’s all-time receiving list, and quarterback James Keefer surpassed 1,000 yards in his first year as a starter. Defensive end Stone Allison was strong against Hughesville, recording three sacks. He leads the area with seven sacks.
Central (2-6) showed its potential two weeks ago by defeating Milton 42-36 in double overtime. The Blue Jays ran for 279 yards in the game, with Ty Regan and Parker Day both rushing for over 100 yards. Dylan Schultz added a score on defense.
wellsboro northwest
Wellsboro had a close game against Canton last week, losing the high-scoring contest 46-34, but the young group continues to improve. The Hornets came alive offensively, becoming the only team to score 20 points against Troy, the state’s top Class AA team. Freshman quarterback Griffin Morrall has thrown at least one touchdown pass in five straight games and shined in Canton with 361 yards of offense and five touchdowns.
Ryder Bowen leads the team in tackles and rushing for the second year in a row. The junior rushed for a career-high 301 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-8 victory over Cowanesque Valley. Marek Mascho and Cody Enku had strong receiving games last week, with both catching two touchdowns and gaining over 90 yards. In the previous two games, Jonathan Karl caught three touchdowns. Mascho and Karl also each had three interceptions.
Northwest (1-7) features a quality passing game, with quarterback Jace McCoy surpassing 1,000 yards by Week 7. The Rangers scored a season-high 22 points in last week’s loss at Cowanesque Valley and also forced three turnovers.
Troy at Central Mountain
Central Mountain faces its latest formidable opponent after playing teams from Shamokin, Montoursville and Mount Carmel who are a combined 19-5 over the past four weeks. The Wildcats are one of the youngest teams in the area, but they played hard and scored the final 20 points a week ago at Mount Carmel.
Cole Koman is one of the area’s leading tacklers, with the sophomore linebacker scoring at least 11 points in three consecutive games and setting a program record with 21 points against Shikellamy. Dalton McDermott intercepted two passes a week ago, and Jake Weaver has rushed for over 100 yards in two of the last three games. In the Silver Bowl, Isaiah Maldonado found Gavin Heberly for a touchdown, and Heberly had four catches for 57 yards.
Troy (8-0) has been dominant, mercifully dominating seven of eight opponents, including winning six straight. The state’s top-ranked 2A team averages 49.1 points per game and 9.3 allowed, the highest in District 4. They also won 18 straight games in the regular season, making them the top seed in the district. Troy has been particularly explosive over the past three weeks, averaging 12.8 yards per play.
Quarterback Evan Woodward surpassed 1,000 yards for the second straight year last week, and leading rusher Brenden Gilliland averaged 14.3 yards per touch and scored 11 touchdowns. Mason Smith had 11 five-way touchdowns and returned two punts and a kickoff for a score.
sheffield at bucktail
The Bucktails (0-6) are looking for their first win and second after losing to Sheffield in the opener. The Bucs only have 15 players this season, but they have continued to fight hard, scoring their final 14 points in last week’s game against Cameron County.
Despite the Bucktails losing two scheduled games when Elk County Catholic was forced to cancel the season due to a lack of players, quarterback Brody Pentz remains on track for his second consecutive 1,000-yard run. I’m raising it. Gavin Yachymiak had scored in three straight games prior to last week, and freshman Teagan Stone appears to have a bright future. Steven Heiser caught a touchdown and also completed two pass attempts for Cameron County.
Sheffield (2-4) defeated Union City 41-12 a week ago, ending a four-game losing streak. It was the third time this season that the Wolverines scored 26 or more points. That includes a 328-yard opener against Bucktail. However, the Bucks were hurt on this day, turning the ball over five times.
Milton’s Mount Carmel
Milton (3-5) has weathered a tough schedule all season, but tonight’s matchup against the No. 9 state-ranked Class AAA team won’t be easy. The Black Panthers have been hit by injuries, but they have a game or two left after going 4-4 last week and defeating Midwest 27-0.
Milton’s passing game has come alive at times this season, with both Chase Lytle and Isaiah Minium producing multiple touchdown performances. Wide receiver Lucas Ditty caught over 100 yards twice and three touchdowns against Central Columbia two weeks ago. Monty Fisher is one of the area leaders in receptions, and the versatile junior has amassed over 1,000 career yards rushing and receiving. Chris Doyle is the man behind the 2000s show.
Milton was on the verge of a HAC-III championship last year with its only league loss at 6-2 against Mount Carmel. That means the Tornadoes could be in a volatile mood tonight as they look to maintain third place in the District 4 Class AAA standings and could move up to second place if Lewisburg loses. Mount Carmel features an explosive and balanced offense, and the starting defense did not allow a score in last week’s win over Central Mountain.
Quarterback Gavin Marshalek set a program record by throwing 111 consecutive passes without an interception, and sophomore Jalen Delaney became the fourth player in program history to reach 50 catches in a season. Sophomore Cooper Kalicki is averaging nearly 100 yards rushing per game, and Mount Carmel received a big boost from standout running back Luke Blessing, who returned from injury last week.
