CHICO, Calif. – The owner of Collier Hardware, Chico’s oldest business, is considering selling the building.
The future of Collier Hardware is up in the air after the family put the building up for sale last month. Matt Lucena’s family owns the building. He told Action News Now he doesn’t know what the future holds for Collier, but said the rise of e-commerce and business throughout downtown has slowed in recent years.
Action News Now asked Downtown Chico Business Association President Greg Scott about the building that is up for sale.
“I know some of those families,” Scott said. “I think the family’s expectation is for the business to continue. They’re very active in the community, especially at events downtown. They’re very good supporters.”
Collier Hardware has a rich history in Chico, with the building dating back to 1871. Collier Hardware opened in 1944. The Lucena family became co-owners of the store in 1963 and took over the business completely eight years later.
To be clear, Matt Lucena could not tell Action News Now if Collier Hardware is closing.
The DCBA recognized the hardware store as a Chico Legacy Business in 2022.
