Interceptions are usually always the fault of the quarterback. Even if it’s not the quarterback’s fault.
After Monday night’s loss to the Bills, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers put the blame on receiver Mike Williams. Even though it’s definitely at least partially the quarterback’s fault.
When Rogers was first asked about the play by reporters, he seemed a bit bullish and said,
He was then asked to lead them through it.
“It was two verticals,” Rogers said. “Allen (Lazard) is down there and Mike is at the red line. So I’m looking at Allen and he raises his hand and three guys follow him. So I’m at the red line. And then I look over there and he’s running an in-breaker. So, it has to be something along the red line.
Rodgers was then asked if he threw the ball thinking Williams would come back.
“No, I was throwing to the red line,” Rodgers said. “But when we got here (gesturing with his arms) I realized he was playing an in-breaker, so I had to adjust a little bit. Line up, one person at the bottom of the seam, one person at the red line.”
As Devin McCourty (Westwood One game caller) said on Tuesday’s PFT Live, Rodgers shouldn’t have thrown where he threw it. Running back Breece Hall was open in the flat. Even if Rodgers didn’t see the hole, he should have thrown the ball away.
Devin pointed out that the red line is an area 4-5 yards from the sideline. In fact, it is painted in red on the practice field to guide receivers.
So Williams decided to change his route. And instead of throwing the pass away, Rodgers decided to adjust it while his arm was mid-delivery.
