ROANOKE, Va. — The University of Lynchburg IHSA Equestrian Team earned the top spot out of nine teams at the Hollins IHSA Show on Saturday with a total of 35 points.
The Hornets’ total drop score was two points ahead of hosts Hollins and James Madison (second place). Washington and Lee finished fourth with 32 points, while Virginia Tech rounded out the top five with 31 points.
Lynchburg took top spot in three classes throughout the show. Zoe Horne took 1st place in Intermediate Fence Section B, Jessica McElhaney took 1st place in Limit Flat Section B and Claire Humphreys took 1st place in Novice Flat Section B. Alexandria Russell took second place in Intermediate Flat Section A.
Three Hornets took third place in their class. Eva Jackson placed third in both the Limit Fence Section B and Limit Flat Section A classes. Elle Nutting and Margaret Stell also placed third in Open Fence Section A and Open Fence Section B respectively. Sophia Scholl placed fourth in the introductory class and Kristin Palmer placed fifth in the open flat.
The Hornets’ next IHSA show will be the Virginia Tech IHSA on Saturday, November 2nd in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The Lynchburg team’s NCEA competitors traveled to Sewanee, Tennessee for a second round match against Sewanee, but lost 5-4 in a close game. Lucy Metzler earned Most Outstanding Performer with a score of 86 in the flat event. The first event, Fences, saw both teams score two of the five points and remain tied on the flat. In the deciding final team points, Abigail Zempf scored a 71, but the Tigers’ Emma Samet scored a 75 to give Sewanee the victory.
The Hornets will host Bridgewater in their next NCEA dual meet on Friday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
