The New York Horse Racing Association recently provided an update to the Long Island Association Small Business Committee on its plans for a $455 million reconstruction of Belmont Park. Small businesses learned about the procurement pipeline for projects with AECOM Tishman as the general contractor.
“Belmont Park is an economic powerhouse on Long Island, and the significant transformation of this venue will bring new jobs, revenue and economic activity,” said LIA President and CEO Matt Cohen in this update. said in a news release. “LIA commends NYRA for engaging regional small businesses to ensure they are aware of the procurement timeline and opportunities following project completion.”
The project is expected to generate $1 billion in construction-related economic impact and create 3,700 construction-related jobs. Racing and non-racing activities at the new facility are expected to generate $155 million in annual economic output.
Next year’s Belmont Stakes will once again be held at Saratoga Race Course, with no interruptions in Belmont construction. The Breeders’ Cup, which attracts international tourists, has committed to return to Belmont Park after construction is complete.
Belmont’s new grandstand will be smaller, allowing for more modern amenities, green space, community recreation opportunities, and an all-weather track that is considered safer and extends the racing season. The grandstand at Belmont Park was torn down, excavated and scaffolding installed.
