BYD, best known for its ultra-affordable EVs including the best-selling Seagull, is rapidly moving into new segments.
BYD plans to launch a new full-size flagship electric SUV from its luxury brand Denza later this year.
According to Denza sales director Zhao Changjiang, Denza N9 will be built on BYD’s new e-Platform 3.0. It will be available in plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrain options and will arrive in China later this year.
BYD’s e3 technology powers the electric SUV. The system is powered by three electric motors, delivering approximately 1,000 horsepower and enabling dual-motor independent steering at the rear.
BYD’s Denza brand last month launched the Z9 GT, the first vehicle powered by e-Platform 3.0. Prices for the Denza Z9 GT start from $47,400 (RMB 334,800), making it a potential rival to the Porsche Panorama.
Previously released camouflaged images revealed that the Denza N9 will be 5.3 meters long and will feature an advanced smart cockpit.
“Denza N9 is a super gentleman of technology,” says Zhao. Denza’s sales manager said last month that the company’s flagship model will be an SUV that rivals will be unable to match within five years.
After selling a record 419,426 vehicles last month, BYD surpassed SAIC Motor Corp. to become China’s largest auto group. Denza accounted for 10,299 units of BYD’s total sales in September, and more than 90,000 units have been sold so far in 2024. The luxury brand currently sells the N7, N8 and N9 electric SUVs, with a new MPV and several electric sedans on the way.
The Denza N9 is the latest model in BYD’s expansion into new markets such as pickup trucks, luxury SUVs, and electric supercars.
