Our first leap into the electrified world of BMW has been an amazing week with the all-new i4 M50 Gran Coupe. With a sleek design, powerful electric motor, and all the refinement you’ve come to expect from BMW, this all-electric sedan blends luxury and exhilarating performance in a way that’s sure to shatter traditional perceptions of EVs. succeeded.
Exterior design: Sporty and elegant – all BMW
At first glance, the 2024 BMW i4 M50 maintains BMW’s signature design language, combining sportiness with an elegant, modern design. It shares the traditional long-hood, short-deck proportions of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, with only subtle details distinguishing it as an EV. We liked the fact that we knew it was all BMW but didn’t scream “I’m electric” at the same time.
The distinctive kidney grille, which is mostly enclosed for aerodynamic purposes, was one design cue reminiscent of its gas-powered sibling. LED headlights, a strong rear stance and sculpted body lines all combine to give the i4 M50 an aggressive look.
Driving through areas such as Springville and Mapleton, the car attracted attention not only for its overall BMW silhouette, but also for its quiet operation, a nod to its electric heritage. Whether I’m parked in my driveway or driving to and from work, this car attracts attention and has me asking a lot of questions about my new BMW.
Interior: Luxurious interior that makes full use of advanced technology
We’ve always known that BMW is great at creating luxurious, driver-focused cabins, and the i4 M50 was no exception. The interior was a combination of high-quality materials and cutting-edge technology. The cabin has a luxurious feel with leather upholstery, soft-touch materials, and brushed metal accents, giving it a sophisticated impression.
The first thing we noticed was the curved 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that blended seamlessly into the 14.9-inch infotainment display. This giant screen is powered by BMW’s latest iDrive 8 operating system, giving you intuitive control over navigation, media and vehicle settings. It was surprisingly responsive and could be controlled by voice and gestures.
Comfort has always been a top priority at BMW, and the i4 M50 did not disappoint. The front seats are heated and ventilated and provided excellent support throughout the week. Adjustable lumbar support ensured a fatigue-free journey even on the long drive to Ogden. There’s plenty of legroom in the back seats, making the i4 M50 a practical option for families and rear-seat passengers, but the sloping roofline reduces headroom for taller passengers. You may feel that way.
Performance: Electrifying power at your fingertips
At the heart of the 2024 BMW i4 M50 is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that delivers an impressive 536 horsepower and 586 pound-feet of torque. This power gives it a 0-60 mph acceleration of just 3.7 seconds, making it one of the fastest EVs in its class.
From the moment we first stepped on the gas pedal, it was clear that the i4 M50 was more than just a luxury sedan. Of course, it was a performance machine, just what we’ve come to expect from the M division.
The instant torque delivery is addictive, especially when passing slow traffic on Route 15 or navigating the winding roads of your local canyon. BMW has done a great job of tuning the throttle response, making it easy to adjust for both city and highway driving.
What stood out during the drive was the Adaptive M Suspension. This allows the i4 to easily handle Utah’s various road conditions. From smooth highways to occasionally rough roads in the countryside, the car was composed and comfortable. The suspension adapted to the selected driving mode, whether it’s Comfort mode for a smooth ride around town or Sport mode for tight handling if you want to enjoy twisting roads.
BMW’s attention to detail extends to the regenerative braking system, which can be adjusted to the driver’s preference. We found the one-pedal driving mode particularly useful in stop-and-go traffic situations around town, where the car can slow to a complete stop without touching the brake pedal.
Range and charging: practical for everyday use
One of the biggest concerns we hear about electric vehicles is range, and the i4 alleviates those concerns with an EPA-estimated range of 270 miles. After a week of driving with a mix of highway driving and city commuting, I found the estimates to be accurate. However, if you’re going to be an all-electric owner, we’ve found that having a home 220-volt Level 2 charger is most important.
Technology and safety features: Packed with innovative features
BMW has packed the i4 with many advanced safety features and driver assistance features. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring make driving easier, especially on long highways.
The i4 also features Parking Assist, which uses cameras and sensors to guide the vehicle into tight spaces, a feature that’s especially useful when navigating crowded parking lots.
BMW also offers fast charging capabilities, allowing you to charge the i4 from 10% to 80% in about 31 minutes using a DC fast charger. I found this to be accurate after getting my BMW to 25% charge on a trip to Ogden and charging it to 84% in just 24 minutes at a Starbucks charger in Provo.
at the end of the week
With a base price starting at around $69,000, the i4 M50 was a great value considering its performance capabilities, high-tech features, and top-notch build quality. While rivals like the Tesla Model 3 Performance and Audi e-tron GT offer stiff competition, the i4 M50 offers the driving dynamics, luxury and precision engineering feel that BMW is known for, as well as staying true to BMW. It stands out. brand.
