Published by US News & World Report. 2025 Best National University Rankings September 24th marks our 40th annual edition. The University of Washington fell from 40th place in the 2024 rankings to 46th place.
According to U.S. News & World Report, this ranking is based on factors such as resources available to students, degree award rates, debt upon graduation, starting salary after graduation, number of majors offered, and general quality of life on campus. It is said that it is based on specific criteria.
“We have no reason to believe that changes in U.S. News (or any other) rankings will affect our application or enrollment,” Wisconsin State University spokesperson Victor Barta said in an email. “We do not use U.S. News rankings at all in our recruitment. We do mention some rankings under ‘Pride Points’ on our admissions homepage, but U.S. News is not one of them. ”
The rankings are designed to help college applicants find and learn about schools, providing additional information along with the rankings, such as acceptance rates, admission rates, and approximate costs.
“It was important to me that UW was ranked internationally,” sophomore Hannah Maxey said. “I want to study abroad someday, so I wasn’t really concerned about (domestic rankings).”
A separate ranking by U.S. News ranked UW No. 7 among the Best Global Universities in 2024-25. For some students, U.S. News & World Report rankings had little influence in choosing UW.
“(The rankings) had no effect on my decision,” sophomore Tegen Behnke said. “I knew the University of Washington was a good school, but I mainly came for the in-state tuition.”
U.S. News & World Report releases its rankings of the Best National Universities every fall.
