Purdue University’s talented workforce is only strong and durable by being healthy. And the Center for Healthy Living staff strives every day to provide employees, their spouses, and dependents with access to the resources, information, and treatment they need to maintain and promote overall health and wellness. I am.
Healthy Living Centers, managed by One to One Health (OTO), offer a wide range of services to treat common illnesses, manage chronic conditions, provide preventive care, and promote health and wellness. CHL employs more than 30 people across three locations in West Lafayette, Hammond and Fort Wayne and provides a multidisciplinary approach to health care. They are committed to providing in-person and virtual services that meet all five pillars of the Healthy Boiler Program.
“Our Healthy Boiler Program sets the foundation for holistic well-being, and CHL’s services support all five pillars of that program: behavioral health, financial health, physical health, social health, and work and health. We help people integrate their lives,” says Associate Candace Shafer. Vice President of Benefits and Payroll in Human Resources. “And each year, our benefits team works with the CHL and OTO teams to enhance and/or add programs and services available to better meet the needs of our faculty and staff.”

These professionals’ patient-centered approach is reflected in everything they do, from the front desk staff who help schedule appointments, to the medical assistants and health care professionals who provide compassionate care. The team includes a health coach who provides physical activity and nutrition plans, a nutritionist who helps create personalized meal plans, a behavioral therapist who provides one-on-one counseling, a clinical pharmacist who walks patients through medication details, and an employee It also includes a Healthcare Navigator to help people maximize their health. Their health insurance benefits.
Over the past year, these staff members worked together to serve 6,075 patients through 21,337 appointments. These range from primary care services such as annual physicals, cholesterol tests, and blood tests to other specialty services such as chronic disease health coaching, medication management, and preventive health exams.
Other staff also support the CHL telehealth program. The program provides 24/7 access to acute care and medical consultation via text, phone, and video chat. Providing diagnosis, treatment, prescription, medical advice and referrals, the team helped facilitate 4,932 appointments in the past year.
In addition to our in-person and virtual health and wellness offerings, CHL also hosts a variety of Healthy Boiler workshops, including monthly recipe clubs, group coaching opportunities, lifestyle programs, and more. Each year, the center offers approximately 25 wellness programs and 20 webinars covering topics such as mindfulness, strength and flexibility training, and chronic disease.
“The staff, programs and services available at each of our CHL locations will exponentially assist us in our ongoing efforts to prioritize the health and wellness of Purdue’s entire population,” said Schaefer. “We are proud to expand the care provided by CHL and our partnership with OTO to all three Purdue campuses and throughout the Purdue community.”
OTO continues to explore additional partnership opportunities to enhance the programs and services offered. Current partnerships with the School of Pharmacy and the College of Nursing provide clinical faculty with the opportunity to work as nurses and pharmacists at West Lafayette CHL. Some Purdue students join the team and serve as pharmacy fellows when available.

Regardless of our position on the team, CHL staff share one goal: supporting the health of Purdue employees and their families. This is demonstrated regularly at multiple events throughout the year, including the CHL Open House in September, where members of the campus community tour our three locations, speak with providers, and learn more about available services. I was given the opportunity to learn more.
CHL also recently launched its annual influenza vaccination campaign. The campaign features multiple opportunities for faculty and staff across Purdue campuses to receive flu shots on campus, at drive-thru events, or by appointment.
CHL employees also pursue the goal of helping others prioritize their own health while raising their own level of care to new heights. Multiple CHL employees at our West Lafayette and Hammond locations recently earned higher education degrees and certifications, and another successfully published a book focused on relaxation tools and mental health coping skills .
CHL ensures that every Purdue family, regardless of location, receives quality, personalized care delivered by a team of highly skilled staff who come to work every day with a friendly face, a listening ear, and a passion to help. We make it easy for you to receive it. Patients can better understand how to improve their overall health.
