(CBS Detroit) — Beginning in October, the city of Detroit is rolling out “Dine with Confidence” restaurant inspection placards in a new step to deter repeat offenders.
“We don’t care about it. We don’t care when it happens. We have nothing to hide. We’re fine,” said Seba general manager Eric Peet.
If a restaurant is compliant, a placard will be displayed. The Detroit City Council passed the ordinance earlier this summer.
After announcing this program, Detroit joined other cities such as New York City. Apart from online reviews like Google and Yelp, companies see this as just another way to help customers choose where to eat.
Pete believes this will encourage violators to keep their facilities compliant.
“If you know you’re being judged, even if it’s just a sham, you want to do something about it,” he told CBS News Detroit.
There are three categories. Green compliance means that a company has no major violations. White corresponds to locations that have not yet been inspected or are temporary if the facility requires modification. Red means the restaurant is closed due to a serious health hazard.
“When you talk about compliance, I want to know what you mean. Is it the kitchen or the equipment?” said Sandeep Gidusri.
For customers like Sandeep, he believes it’s important to know how compliant a company is. Each placard has a QR code that provides detailed information about the test.
“Some people don’t care. Some people don’t care because they’re going to their favorite places, but in general I think most people will take action on this,” Pete said.
Pete believes some businesses may see fewer customers as the new ordinance expands. He believes that will ultimately lead to closures.
“If we’re eating here, we can confidently say to ourselves and our families that we ate good food, that we ate clean and healthy food,” Giduturi said.
