CHIVRES, Belgium — Every year on October 4, people around the world gather to celebrate World Animal Day. This special day aims to raise awareness of animal welfare and promote the protection of all animals, including pets, wildlife and livestock. October 4th is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, demonstrating the importance of this day’s choice.
Why is World Animal Day important?
The importance of World Animal Day extends beyond a single holiday. This is a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to ensure the well-being of animals around the world. The challenges are vast and diverse, from endangered species on the brink of extinction to neglected and suffering livestock. World Animal Day encourages individuals, organizations and governments to take action and make a difference.
Animal activity at the garrison
USAG Benelux Airlines aims to maintain mission capability while protecting the biodiversity within its facilities. It is home to a variety of animals, from bats at the German military ruins at Chievres Air Base (CAB) in Belgium to newts and bees at Army Prepositioned Stock Site-2 (APS-2) at Dürmentower Barracks, Germany. Masu. The Public Works Bureau’s Environment Division is working tirelessly to ensure the conservation of this biodiversity. Some of our main activities throughout the year are listed below.
TES Surveys: The Environment Department annually conducts Endangered Species (TES) surveys at APS-2 in Ztendaal, Belgium, Starebeek Annex in Brussels, Belgium, APS-2 in Dülmen, and CAB. These surveys aim to monitor the presence of protected or endangered species at military garrisons.
Winter inventory of bats: Every January, natural resource managers survey protected species of bats hibernating in the basements of CAB’s German sites.
Bird calls: In June, the Environment Department, in collaboration with local bird groups, will make calls for newborn peregrine falcons and little owls nesting in the CAB and Caserne Dormery.
Nest Box Installation: Bird nest boxes are installed at nearly all USAG Benelux Island locations and provide an essential safe haven for birds during the winter and breeding season.
What can you do?
There are many ways individuals can help save animals.
Volunteer: Spend time at your local animal shelter. Many shelters rely on volunteers to care for animals and assist with daily tasks.
Fundraisers: Organize fundraising events such as bake sales, charity runs, and online fundraisers to support animal welfare organizations.
Promote education: Use social media platforms to share information about the importance of animal rights and conservation.
Adopt rather than shop: Consider adopting a pet from a shelter rather than buying from a breeder or pet store.
Donate: Financially support wildlife conservation efforts that protect endangered species and their habitats.
I’m looking forward to it
While we celebrate World Animal Day, remember that efforts to protect animals need to continue throughout the year. Let’s create a better world for both animals and humans by fostering a culture of compassion and respect for all living things.
