LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Halloween is about a month away, but stores and shoppers already have a head start.
According to the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) annual survey, nearly half of Halloween shoppers have already started purchasing seasonal items.
The survey of nearly 8,000 consumers found that 47% of consumers started shopping before October of this year, up from 37% in 2019. NRF said in a release Monday that it expects 2024 Halloween sales to be $11.6 billion, just shy of last year’s record. 12.2 billion dollars.
“Halloween marks the beginning of an important period of preparation for the holiday shopping season,” Kentucky Retail Federation President Todd Griffin said in a news release Monday. “Seeing people shop earlier may indicate that holiday shopping is starting earlier, continuing a larger trend as people spread out their purchases.”
NRF also predicts that Americans will spend an average of $104 per person on Halloween-themed items, just a few dollars shy of last year’s record of $108.24.
The survey also found that Americans plan to spend $3.8 billion on costumes and accessories and $3.5 billion on candy. Of the $3.8 billion, $1.3 billion is expected to be spent on children’s costumes, with Spider-Man, ghosts, princesses, witches and superheroes being the most popular.
