Sheffield head coach Mike Barr wants the Wolverines to: “Please make memories” Saturday in the homecoming game against Otto Eldred/Oswayo Valley at Wolverine Mountain. The second half was strong, but it wasn’t enough to overcome OEOV’s huge first half as the Terrors won 56-32 in District 9, Region 3.
Defeating Sheffield for the 13th time in a row, first-place OEOV led 22-0 after one quarter and 44-0 at halftime, silencing the large crowd of Sheffield alumni and fans.
The Terrors (5-0 in district) defeated Sheffield, already 1-3, 44-6 in the second game of the season, taking a 16-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
OEOV quarterback Shane McGee threw the first of four first-half touchdown passes, and teammate Manning Splain completed the pass on defense, completing a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown. .
Three of McGee’s touchdown passes went to Rayshen Thomas, including one with six seconds left in the first half.
It also didn’t help that the Wolverines turned the ball over four times in the first half. OEOV recovered an onside kick right after the final TD pass, but McGee took a knee and elected to run out the clock.
In the second half, “The difference between day and night” According to Coach Barr.
Sheffield stole the ball after halftime and ran down the field, scoring the first of Colby Barr’s two rushing scores. He had a 39-yard touchdown run with 10:08 left in the third quarter and a 10-yard score with 1:40 left in the quarter.
Barr accounted for most of his 104 yards rushing in the second half, and Sheffield ran the ball well overall.
Otto scored a touchdown on the ensuing 65-yard kickoff return, breaking Sheffield’s momentum, and OEOV built a 56-13 lead early in the fourth on sophomore Mason Shenfield’s first varsity touchdown pass.
“We just didn’t deliver in the first and second quarters.” said Coach Barr. “We saw something on film and thought we could take advantage of it. It worked. It just took effect two quarters too late.”
Sheffield finished the game with three goals, but time ran out. On the final play of the game, Shire Brownhouse crossed the goal line as the clock hit zero.
“When you play against Otto-Eldred, you don’t know what’s going to cause a mind block.” said Coach Barr. “It’s there, but once we see that those kids are human, we play with them.”
Both of Otto’s quarterbacks were competent except for Shenfield, who made an acrobatic interception of Otto’s junior varsity quarterback Darrell Barno, who came in with a big lead. McGee completed 10 of 15 passes for 158 yards and four scores in the first half. Shenfield completed 5 of 8 for 52 yards and one score.
Sheffield, who has over 2,000 career receiving yards, held OEOV’s Splain to just three catches for 47 yards, but his defense cost him a touchdown. Sheffield, who has more than 2,000 career rushing yards, held running back Hunter Apps without a rushing score but had 105 yards rushing, one receiving touchdown and two two-point conversions.
Otto Eldred/Oswayo Valley started 2-0, lost to Kane in non-region, but has won three straight since then.
“I think the loss to Kane made the players focus more on their preparation.” OEOV coach Troy Cook said. “We’ve been very locked in since then. I just hope we can keep this momentum going.”
“Lock-in” is what Coach Barr wants the Wolverines to do going forward.
“Very good to strengthen the second half heading into Cameron County.” said Coach Barr. “(Friday night’s) Town Meeting was amazing. The crowd (Saturday) was the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen at a high school football game in Sheffield. I love it. The kids loved it. They just have to learn how to play in front of it. We’ve been depressed for so long and for so many years that this is all new to them, so it’s a matter of mindset. There are still three games left, so I want to enjoy them. ”
