Milwaukee – A Waukesha County judge has sentenced an 18-year-old Chicago man to two years in prison and two years of extended supervision in connection with the theft of a luxury SUV in February.
Prosecutors initially charged Calvin Valentine with four felonies. He reached a plea deal in July and was convicted of breaking and entering a building or residence and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. Two other charges were dismissed.

Details of the incident
According to a criminal complaint, on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 18, Waukesha Police were dispatched to an auto dealership on Moreland Boulevard. Dealership owners reported multiple vehicles stolen.
When officers arrived at the dealership, they found broken glass in the parking lot, a garage door about a quarter open, and another garage door completely destroyed, “as if a car had gone through it.” was discovered, the complaint states. .
The car dealership’s general manager shared surveillance video of what happened. The video showed a silver minivan pulling up to a garage door on the east side of the building, according to the complaint. About nine people, all wearing gloves and masks, got out of the car and pushed open the garage door. The group entered the dealership, pried open the lockbox, took the keys, and “then searched the entire dealership for vehicles associated with the keys.”
Prosecutors said the group got into a Land Rover Velar and used it “as a battering ram” to drive through the garage door. It caused “significant” damage to the SUV and garage door. The group then boarded a second Land Rover and drove through the same door. The first Land Rover was left behind and the group drove off in the second. It was discovered in Chicago later that morning.

The day after the vehicle theft, detectives received a tip that one of the suspects, Valentine, was taken into custody in West Allis. He was taken into custody after a police pursuit and crash involving a 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Westminster, according to the complaint. It was a vehicle valued at $73,998.
Prosecutors said during questioning that Valentine told police he was picked up in the Chicago area. He said that “a friend gave him the keys and he got into a white SUV” but caused an accident during the pursuit.
Valentine told police he didn’t know what people would do with the car, according to the complaint. He said he had no idea where he was going while he was driving, and claimed he had never stolen a car before, saying: “I’m not going to lie, I stole a car.” He removed the keys from a rack inside the car dealership, but said, “I only had one key.”
