The Israeli military announced today that Hezbollah’s top commander, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an attack on Beirut. A source close to Hezbollah told AFP news agency that communications with the 64-year-old Nasrallah had been cut off since Friday night.

Following heavy Hezbollah rocket attacks on northern Israel, Israeli strikes targeted dozens of Hezbollah strongholds in eastern and southern Lebanon. Israeli warplanes bombed Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut overnight, destroying several residential buildings.
“Hassan Nasrallah can no longer terrorize the world,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

This wave of retaliatory attacks came just hours after Hezbollah claimed responsibility for firing rockets into northern Israel. One such attack targeted Kibbutz Kavli using Fadi-1 rockets, which Hezbollah said was to protect Lebanon from Israel’s “barbaric” invasion.
Nasrallah holds enormous power in Lebanon, especially among his Shiite supporters, and is seen as the only person capable of waging war or brokering peace.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported that her 64-year-old daughter Zainab was killed in one of the airstrikes targeting Hezbollah strongholds south of Beirut, but there was no confirmation from Hezbollah or Lebanese media.
Nasrallah was rumored to have been killed in 2006 after Israel’s invasion of Lebanon. However, the Shiite leader re-emerged unharmed several days later. The Israeli airstrike also killed Hezbollah Southern Front commander Ali Karakeh and other Hezbollah members.

Israel’s bombing of Lebanon has killed more than 700 people and displaced approximately 118,000 people.
