“ABC World News Tonight with David Muir” and CNN’s “The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper” were among the major winners on the first day of the 45th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, held Wednesday at the Palladium Times Square in New York City. The first of two nights is dedicated to the news categories, with documentary winners announced Thursday night.
CNN’s Nada Bashir won the Outstanding Emerging Journalist award, and Univision’s Pedro Urteras won the Outstanding Journalist in Spanish-Language Media award.
Bashir was also one of the show’s hosts, along with Jim Axelrod, Jamelle Bouie, Maria Antonietta Collins, Joe Fryer, Amna Nawaz, Rachel Scott and Del Walters.
Coverage of the Middle East wars won in many categories, including Outstanding Breaking News Reporting (CNN’s “Israel-Hamas War”), Outstanding Short Form Continuing News Reporting and Outstanding Long Form Continuing News Reporting (conflict coverage by Clarissa Ward and Anderson Cooper, respectively).
In the Outstanding Hard News Feature: Short Form category, “I’m Bisan from Gaza. I’m Still Alive” won an Emmy for journalist Bisan Ouda, just one week after the National Television Academy rejected her nomination despite a campaign calling for it to be rescinded.
ABC’s “2020” tribute to Barbara Walters, “Our Barbara,” won a special award for Outstanding Recorded News.
CNN led all broadcast networks with 11 wins, ABC had six and ABC News Studios added three more. “The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper” and “Trafficked With Marianna van Zeller” led individual shows with five wins each.
As previously announced, Jane Pauley received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her more than 50 years of experience in broadcast journalism. She has also received four Daytime Emmy Awards, five News and Documentary Emmy Awards, a Sports Emmy Award, the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism, the Edward R. Murrow Award for Distinguished Service and the Gracie Allen Award from the Foundation for American Women in Radio and Television.
The News & Documentary Emmy Awards, selected from more than 2,200 submissions by more than 980 jurors working in the news and documentary industries across television and streaming/digital media, celebrate achievements in television programming in 2023.
