The Marshalltown boys golf team seems to be hitting its stride at just the right time.
The Bobcats posted their best showing of the season to beat Mason City, outscoring the Riverhawks 306-338 on Tuesday in Iowa Alliance Conference action at Elmwood Country Club.
The Bobcats posted a season-high score of 312 in back-to-back meets last year and dominated all of Mason City with their consistent scoring.
MHS freshman Joe Griesel shot a 1-under 34 over the first nine holes to finish with a 4-over 74 for the medalist round.
“Joe Griesel putted well over the first nine holes to get out to an early lead,” MHS head coach Lucas Johnson said. “He had a few bogeys in the second half, but he avoided the big numbers and hung in there until the end.”
Bobcat senior Ty Faltis was the tournament runner-up, firing a 1-under 34 on the back nine to earn silver with a 75. Faltis birdied the 11th, 12th and 13th holes but made a triple bogey on the par-4 14th to give it all back.
“Ty Faltis wasn’t happy with his first nine holes, but his putting improved in the second half and he posted incredible scores on the 11th and 13th holes to get back in medal contention,” Johnson said. “If it weren’t for an out-of-bounds tee ball on the 14th hole, he would have been looking at a score of 31 or 32 on the final hole.”
Seniors Eli Polly and Adam Boone finished with scores of 78 and 79, respectively, to round out Marshalltown’s winning team point totals.
“I thought Eli Pauley and Adam Boone played a good team game, encouraging each other,” Johnson said. “It was awesome to see Adam sink that 7-foot putt on the 18th hole to break 80 for the first time in his high school career.”
Also competing for the Bobcats were sophomores Parker Christen (92) and Jacob Seberger (100). The Bobcats will compete in their third tournament in three days on Wednesday at the Southeast Polk Invitational at Copper Creek Golf Club in Pleasant Hill.
“We need four players scoring in the 70s to get there by the end of the year,” Johnson said. “All of these players at the college level have proven they can do it if they’re patient and play smart.”
