The national ranking evaluates nearly 1,500 colleges and universities using up to 17 measures of academic quality to guide prospective students and their families. This year’s edition continues to prioritize social mobility and post-graduation success.
More than 50 percent of institutions’ rankings include a range of outcome measures related to their success in enrolling students from all backgrounds and graduating them with manageable debt, as well as graduate earnings.

This edition of the rankings also includes specialty rankings such as best value schools, most innovative colleges, top performing colleges for social mobility, historically black colleges and universities with the highest commitment to undergraduate education, etc. Additionally, you will find programs that enhance the student experience, such as first-year experiences, co-op/internships, service learning, study abroad, and undergraduate research/creative projects.

The 2025 Best Colleges methodology is calculated using up to 17 key measures of academic quality for public universities and 13 indicators for national liberal arts colleges, regional universities, and local colleges. The formula uses data universally reported by schools or data available from third-party sources. A school’s eligibility for ranking is not contingent on participation in the U.S. News survey.
