Shein – Introduction
Headquartered in Singapore, SHEIN sells affordable clothing and accessories under the SHEIN brand through a global network of vendors. The company has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for an initial public offering (IPO) on the U.S. stock market in the second half of 2023 and is reportedly considering joining the National Retail Federation to improve its chances of receiving SEC approval.
But SHEIN has been publicly accused of unfair labor practices and ties to China’s Communist government, and over the past year, SHEIN and another major Chinese shopping app, Temu, have been suing each other over unfair trade practices.
The Biden-Harris administration is targeting Shein and Temu with new executive actions that will mean that shipments from China worth less than $800 – which make up the majority of Shein’s imports – will no longer be eligible for special U.S. tariff exemptions.
