Governor’s Award winners announced
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) presented the winners with the 2024 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence at the Indiana Sustainability Partners Association Annual Conference and Exposition.
The Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence is Indiana’s most prestigious environmental recognition. It is awarded to the most innovative, sustainable and exemplary programs and projects that have a positive impact on Indiana’s environment and have demonstrated measurable environmental, economic and social benefits. The selection process is highly competitive.
The categories and winners of the 2024 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence are as follows:
Contamination Prevention – Electrospec in Franklin – Electrospec previously used trichloroethylene (TCE) in a vacuum vapor environment to safely degrease metals, but this chemical can pose environmental issues if not handled properly. Alternative solvents did not have the low surface tension required to clean small parts or work with Electrospec’s equipment. The purchase of new vacuum vapor degreaser allowed Electrospec to eliminate the use of TCE at their facility, realizing cost savings of over $10,000 over three years. The machine also benefits employees with ergonomic issues by allowing them to operate it without heavy lifting or bending over.
