Warner Bros. Discovery is expanding its board of directors.
The entertainment company said Daniel Sanchez will join its board of directors starting Oct. 1. Sanchez is familiar to Discovery shareholders, having served on the company’s board since before its 2022 merger with WarnerMedia to form the current company.
He is also the nephew of John Malone, a director and shareholder in WBD, and currently serves on the board of directors of Malone’s Liberty Global Ltd. and Liberty Latin America Ltd. Prior to his retirement in 2021, Sanchez worked as an attorney, focusing on tax law and tax planning.
Malone is a major shareholder in a number of media-related companies, including Liberty Companies (which oversees properties such as SiriusXM, Formula 1 and the Atlanta Braves) and Charter Communications, and is a mentor to WBD CEO David Zaslav.
WBD said in a statement that Sanchez’s legal expertise will help “assist the board in developing a strategy that takes into account a wide range of issues arising from the application and evolution of tax laws and regulations.”
“Dan’s legal background, business experience and outstanding service on Discovery’s board of directors make him a positive addition to WBD’s board of directors,” WBD board chairman Samuel A. Di Piazza Jr. said in a statement. “Our company and industry are undergoing a period of exceptional change, and with it, exceptional opportunities. Dan will be an important voice as we advise the board on growth plans, changing consumer preferences and strategic initiatives.”
