TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Lightning named Victor Hedman team captain after the Bolts’ longtime team captain, Steven Stamkos, left Tampa Bay shortly after the NHL’s free agency period began on July 1 and signed a four-year, $32 million contract with the Nashville Predators.
Stamkos has served as the team captain for the past 10 seasons.
“We are excited that Victor will lead our team as the 11th captain in franchise history,” said General Manager Julien Brisebois. “Victor is a core player who is highly respected by his teammates, coaches and peers in the NHL. He has represented our organization as a world-class player on and off the ice for the past 15 seasons. Victor embodies what it means to be a part of the Tampa Bay Lightning and is well prepared for this exciting opportunity. We look forward to watching him excel in his new role as we continue to work toward our goal of winning the Stanley Cup.”
Hedman spent his entire career with Tampa Bay and was a three-time All-Star. Hedman appeared in 1,052 games, scoring 156 goals and 572 assists for a total of 728 points.
Hedman leads the franchise in games played, power play points and game-winning goals.
