I recently went back to visit my parents, which is always a great opportunity to catch up with my siblings, spend time with my nieces and nephews, and sleep in twin beds with horrible pillows for a few days. It also gives me a chance to spend some time with the E39 BMW 540i my parents have kept for me. I love this car, but unfortunately it’s 25 years old and this city is not the place to let German cars age.
Also, I still believe it’s one of the best cars ever made. Everyone wants an M5 and I have to admit they have a point. But it doesn’t make that much of a difference in daily driving. Sure, you get a little more torque and more horsepower, but it doesn’t make that much of a difference. You’re mostly paying for the quad exhaust and the M badge.
Am I just accepting the fact that I didn’t have the money when I bought my M5 over a decade ago? Probably. And it’s not my fault I fell in love with the 540i. It has the manual and the sport suspension, and everything is absolutely great. Suspension settings? Forget it. The suspension is precise. Infotainment? If you count the CD player, I think so. It’s a lot of fun to drive, and it’s more comfortable on long drives than you’d expect.
But at the same time, I know there are plenty of more luxurious cars out there. This may be the only luxury car I’ve ever owned, but there’s a whole world of comfort out there waiting to be explored. So I’m curious: what do you think is the greatest luxury car ever made?
