Dr. Shafiqul Chowdhury, professor of veterinary medicine at LSU, is one of five recipients of the 2024 Bayh-Doré Union American Inventor Award for developing a groundbreaking vaccine.
Choudhury is featured in the BayDore Coalition’s 2024 Faces of American Innovation report. He developed a novel viral vector vaccine to combat bovine respiratory disease, which is one of the leading causes of mortality in young cattle and has a significant economic impact on the beef and dairy industries.
Chowdhury has partnered with South Dakota-based RTI to test and commercialize the vaccine.

The Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants recently presented its Annual Service Awards.
Candace “Candy” Wright, a partner in EisnerAmper’s Audit & Assurance Services group in Baton Rouge, received a special recognition award in recognition of her outstanding and dedicated service. Wright has nearly 40 years of experience as a certified public accountant.
John Theriot, managing partner at Malcolm M. Diens in Metairie, received the Outstanding Public Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the LCPA for leadership, influence, engagement and innovation in public service. Theriot has served as counsel at several schools, including Archbishop Rummel High School, Archbishop Chapelle High School, Mount Carmel Academy and St. Michael Special School.
Robert “Bobby” Baruse, chief financial officer for Elmer Candy Co. in Covington, received the Certified Public Accountant of Excellence in Business and Industry Award.
Dennis James, a director at James Lambert Riggs and Associates in Hammond, received the Life Membership Award. James has served as a trusted financial advisor to several government agencies in Tanjipahoa Parish.
Lou Le Guyader, associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Finance at Southeastern Louisiana University, received the Outstanding Achievement in Accounting Education Award.

Professor Index was named the winner of Nexus Louisiana’s recent PitchBR competition.
Professor Index was founded by Nash Mahmoud, an associate professor in the LSU Computer Science and Engineering Department, to provide an easy-to-use platform for students to rate their professors and their overall academic experience.
Other participants in the pitch competition include BeautyFindr, an app launched by Annabeth Guillory that connects customers with hairdressers, estheticians and other beauty professionals, and Blue Tree, launched by Rodney Sheppard, a business that aims to stimulate economic activity on college campuses by connecting business owners with people looking for specific products and services.
