North Shore Health Center opens in Crown Point
Last month, North Shore Health Centers held a ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony to celebrate the opening of its new Crown Point facility, at 310 W. 112th St., with about 175 guests in attendance, according to a release.
The event marked the culmination of the health system’s expansion into four cities. Highland State Rep. Frank Mulvan (D-Hillsville) and Crown Point Mayor Pete Lund participated in the ribbon cutting along with key North Shore health care providers and staff, according to the release.
The nonprofit provides a full-service clinic, medical, dental and dental services in local school districts.
According to the announcement, the facility also offers services such as vision correction, chiropractic care, podiatry, mental health and medication assistance through its on-site pharmacy.
Gallery opens in Valparaiso
According to a release, the Valparaiso Artists Guild will host a grand opening for its new Gallery 255 at 255 Indiana Street in Valparaiso on Sept. 21 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
Coinciding with the opening of Gallery 255 is the launch of the Guild’s September Members Exhibition, which will feature contemporary artworks created in a variety of styles and media by more than 70 member artists.
According to the release, Gallery 255 is open Thursday through Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., while Wing 257 is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Guides will be on hand during Gallery 255’s regular business hours to answer questions about both spaces. AGV Gallery and the wing (257 Indiana Ave.) are operated by the nonprofit Artists’ Guild of Valparaiso.

New eatery opens in Gary’s Miller District
Brass Idol, located at 5900 Miller Avenue in the heart of Gary’s Miller Business District, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 13, according to a press release.
The establishment brings history and revitalization to the Miller area’s growing restaurant district. The establishment is located in a fully restored, 100-year-old building that was previously a Texaco gas station and later housed a variety of small restaurants and other businesses, the release said.
The Brass Idol co-owner Sam Djerassi is a former teacher and real estate agent who said in a press release that he modeled the interior design after a friend’s restaurant in San Diego. For more information, visit thebrassidol.com.
The South Haven Fire Department is accepting applications.
According to the announcement, the Portage Township Trustee’s Office and the South Haven Fire Department are accepting applications to develop a qualifications list for potential firefighter/paramedic positions that may become available next year.
Starting salaries for paramedics are $58,500 and for EMTs, $46,000, according to the announcement.
According to the release, all applicants must hold a valid EMT-B certification in Indiana and be over the age of 18. Commissioner sworn in at Franciscan Health’s newest VASIA class
Franciscan Health, in partnership with the Lake County Courthouse to provide volunteer advocates for those who are elderly or incapacitated and unable to represent themselves, has now announced five new members.
Lake Superior Court Probate Commissioner Ben Barrow administered the oath to a class of five Volunteer Advocates for the Elderly and Incapacitated (VASIA) during a recent ceremony.The new attorneys announced were Barbara Cerwinski of Saint John, Abigail Guidry of Crown Point, Karen Hill of Crown Point, Jacqueline Mojica of Hammond and Kianna Scott of Merrillville.
The court works with Franciscan Health to provide trained, supervised volunteers to serve as court-appointed representatives to assist seniors and incapacitated individuals. Now in its 22nd year, the program partners with programs serving seniors and incapacitated individuals throughout Lake County to increase continuity of elder law advocacy and support.

PNW Welcomes New Alumni Advisory Board
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) has announced new members to its Alumni Advisory Board, according to a press release.
The board includes 14 PNW alumni from diverse backgrounds whose perspectives will be influential in contributing to the university’s efforts, according to the announcement.

Franciscan Health Crown Point Hosts Doula Workshop
Franciscan Health Crown Point has announced that it will host a doula certification workshop over two weeks in October and will be accepting a limited number of need-based scholarship applications to help cover registration fees.
According to the announcement, doulas are trained professionals who provide ongoing physical, emotional and informational support to clients before, during and immediately after birth.
The doula certification workshops will be held Oct. 5-6 and Oct. 12-13 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Marian Education Center at Franciscan Health Main Street Outpatient Center, 1201 S. Main St. in Crown Point. Participants must attend all four days to receive a certificate of completion.
