ABC’s Lindsey Davis acknowledged that the previous CNN debate, which went unfavorably for President Joe Biden, influenced Trump’s fact-checking.
ABC hosts Lindsey Davis and David Muir were slammed by critics for being biased towards Donald Trump’s Democratic rival, Kamala Harris. During the most-anticipated first presidential debate between the Republican and Democratic candidates, the hosts fact-checked Trump’s comments five times but did not correct Harris once.
Trump also subsequently slammed the ABC hosts for alleged bias: “It was three to one. It was a rigged deal, just as I predicted,” Trump told “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday.
Lindsey Davis explains why fact-checking Trump was important
In an interview after the debate, Davis acknowledged that the previous CNN debate, which ended badly for President Joe Biden and led to him withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, influenced Trump’s fact-checking.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times over breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Philadelphia, Davis said he was simply trying to address concerns that Trump’s comments would be left “unchecked” by Harris and the moderators, as they were in the June debate with Biden.
“People were concerned that the comments would be left standing and not refuted by then-candidate Biden or the moderators,” she said.
During one of the more high-profile debates, Davis firmly told Trump that “there is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after birth,” correcting the former president for comments made in 2019 by former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam who suggested newborns could be killed shortly after birth following a “discussion” between the mother and her doctor.

Davis has shut down his social media accounts
Davis said her team planned to fact-check both candidates during the debate but did not do any for Harris.
The site reported that Davis had shut down her social media accounts and simply ignored accusations that she was supporting Harris.
“I am painfully aware that there is a stereotype that this moment cannot be covered fairly, and anonymous people on Instagram remind me of that every day,” she said.
