Loyalsock knew it was going to be a tough battle coming into their home game against unbeaten Central Columbia on Tuesday night, and unfortunately for the Lancers, it didn’t take long for the Blue Jays to score, and the Blue Jays took the momentum from there.
Central Columbia scored two goals within the first 12 minutes of Tuesday’s game to win 8-0 and remain unbeaten, while the Lancers fell to .500 at 3-3. Four different players scored goals for Central Columbia in the win.
“They’ve got a lot of dangerous players all over the field. When they can get around and get the ball left and right, off the lines and into the corners, they can be really dangerous.” “We’re just trying to get the game under control,” Central Columbia coach Zach Diehl said. “They’re all quick, athletic kids who are dangerous in one-on-one situations. We have a lot of weapons that can really hurt opponents.”
Loyalsock coach Steve Ertell declined to comment after the game.
Loyalsock trailed just 3-0 at halftime, but one of the Blue Jays’ first-half goals came on a penalty kick.Defensively, the Lancers were able to get close on Blue Jays players multiple times, and even when players like Toryn Karns, Dominic Taylor and Anthony Sedore seemed to get free during the first 40 minutes, they quickly neutralized the threat.
“One of the things I said at halftime was they broke us down really quickly. I was pretty impressed with that.” “They were great,” Diehl said of Loyalsock’s defense. “They got their numbers back quickly, stopped the one-on-ones, shut down the passing lanes. They did a really good job.”
With 28 minutes left until halftime, Kearns and Sedore each put Central Columbia up 2-0.
With 13 minutes, 26 seconds left, Central Columbia got within the 18-yard line and had a one-on-one opportunity with Lancers goalie Brycen Savoy, but Loyalsock quickly swarmed in and blocked the shot.
That defensive pressure helped Loyalsock stay in the game until the end of the first half.
The Blue Jays led 3-0 with 11 minutes, 26 seconds left in the game.
But the second half saw a burst of momentum, with Central Columbia scoring on a penalty kick less than three minutes into the game, then scoring two more in the next 10 minutes to jump out to a 6-0 lead and adding two more before the final horn sounded.
The Blue Jays’ Karns had a hat trick, while Sedore and Gage Gensmer each scored two points.
“We can move the ball. We have a lot of players who can control the ball, move it from side to side, look for the best option and look for the players up front.” Deal said. “We play a lot of football and have a lot of guys who are good with the ball, so it’s easy.”
Loyalsock was without their usual keeper, Connor Lang, but Savoy stepped up to the plate in goal. The final score on the scoreboard was an eight-point deficit, but that didn’t really indicate how well Savoy played as a goalkeeper. Normally a midfielder, the senior made eight saves in the loss and gave his all as a goalkeeper for the Lancers. He recorded four saves in both the first and second halves, along with a couple of diving blocks.
“I thought he was really good, coming in as a substitute if he wasn’t the regular goalkeeper and going up against guys who are playing a lot of football and scoring a lot of goals and he did a really good job tonight.” “He’s a great guy,” Deal said of the Loyalsock goalkeeper. “It may not show in the results, but he was much better than the scores would suggest.”
Loyalsock was able to get some offense going in the second half, and after not getting a single shot on goal in the first 40 minutes, Evan Anderson, Wesley Johnson and David Bjorkman all got shots on goal in the second half as Loyalsock tried to break the scoreless streak with three shots on goal.
Loyalsock will play a 7 pm night game at Warrior Run on Thursday before hosting South Williamsport on Monday night.
