Compatriot Meryem En Nouri finished just over nine minutes behind, followed by Michishita, nearly 15 minutes behind the winner.
Elena Congosto thought she had won the bronze medal but was disqualified after letting go of her guide, Mia Carol Bruguera, just before the finish line.
Michishita only found out he’d been promoted to bronze medal when he was on his way to a doping test.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said the Japanese runner, who had been injured after winning the last Tokyo Olympics and was unsure whether she would be able to race in Paris.
Tunisia’s Wajdi Bouhiri won the men’s T12 marathon.
The 25-year-old Bouhiri finished in two hours, 22 minutes and five seconds, ahead of Spain’s Alberto Suarez Laso and Paralympic record holder El Amin Shentouf of Morocco, all three of whom ran season’s best times.
Swiss wheelchair racers Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug won the women’s and men’s marathon in the T53/54 category.
World record holder De Brunner finished in 1 hour, 41 minutes and 50 seconds, more than four minutes ahead of silver and bronze medal winners Madison de Rosario of Australia and Susanna Scaloni of the United States.
Tatyana McFadden, the most decorated American wheelchair athlete, finished seventh, just 12 minutes behind DeBrunner. The 35-year-old McFadden leaves Paris with a silver medal in the 100 meters and a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meters universal relay.
Hug won the men’s race in one hour, 27 minutes and 39 seconds, beating China’s Jing Hua and Japan’s Suzuki Tomoki.
British wheelchair athlete David Weir announced his retirement from Paralympics at the age of 45 after finishing fifth in the men’s race.
Weir has won six gold medals in total at Paralympics, four of which came in the marathon at the 2012 London Games, but has failed to win a medal in the three Games since.
Weir said he plans to continue competing in individual races, including the Berlin Marathon on September 29.
Dutch women defend gold medal in wheelchair basketball
The Dutch women’s wheelchair basketball team defeated the United States 63-49 in the final to defend their gold medal.
Bo Kramer added 23 points and Mariska Beyer added 22 as the Netherlands showed their experience in front of a sold-out crowd at the Bercy Arena.
Trailing 48-37 going into the fourth quarter, the Americans shook hands as they listened to coach Christina Schwab’s team talk. Ishhert Gonzalez raised hopes with two points at the break, but Kramer answered with two free kicks and a three-pointer to underscore the Dutch dominance.
“I don’t think we peaked as a team,” said Rose Hollerman, who scored 17 points for the U.S. “I think we still have a lot left. We never felt like we were in our groove as a team, so I’m really proud to finish with the silver medal.”
The 28-year-old Hollerman was already showing a positive attitude.
“We still have a lot of work to do and I think it’s great that as a team we can take that and get back to work,” she said.
Canada lost to China 65-43 in the bronze medal game.
“I want to go back two hours, I want to replay that game,” Canada coach Michel Song said.
New world record in powerlifting
Defending champion Folashade Oluwafemi Ayo of Nigeria took home another gold medal in the women’s para powerlifting final in the over 86 kg category, bench pressing 167 kg above her chest, breaking her own world record.
The 39-year-old Oluwafemi Ayo lifted 166 pounds in the third round, beating his personal best set in Tbilisi, Georgia in June by one kilogram. He then went on to delight the crowd at La Chapelle Arena by adding another kilo to his powerlifting record.
In the men’s over 107 kg final, Ahmad Aminzadeh of Iran won with a lift of 263 pounds, the last of the 549 gold medals awarded at the tournament.
China dominates
At the Paris Paralympics, China won 94 gold medals (compared to Great Britain’s 49), nearly twice as many as any other country.
In total, China won 220 medals (94 gold, 76 silver and 50 bronze), followed by Great Britain with 124 and the United States with 105. Great Britain won 44 silver and 31 bronze medals, while the United States won 36 gold, 42 silver and 27 bronze medals.
While Brazilian athletes won 89 medals, Dutch athletes won 27 gold medals to Brazil’s 25.
Host nation France won 19 of the 75 total gold medals, placing them 8th in the medal standings.
The closing ceremony is due to take place later on Sunday, with artistic director Thomas Joly promising a huge dance party at the Stade de France.
