BOSTON — Sports radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub has named a new Boston Bruins play-by-play announcer following the departure of Judd Sirrott to NESN to replace Jack Edwards on Boston Bruins television broadcasts.
Beasley Media Group announced Friday that Ryan Johnston will take over Sirrott’s play-by-play duties on the radio broadcasts, joining longtime commentator Bob Beers.
Johnston, a Syracuse University graduate and sports radio veteran, has been with 98.5 since 2009 and has previously called play-by-play for Bruins games. He has also been the main host of the station’s Saturday morning “Sports Hub Hockey Show” since 2012 and has been a regular fill-in on the morning show “Toucher & Hardy” for the past three years.
In addition to his work at 98.5, Johnston freelances as a play-by-play commentator for college hockey, calling games for the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Merrimack College and the University of New Hampshire for NESN, ESPN+ and Fox Sports.
“This is truly my dream job and I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity,” Johnston said in a statement. “I’d like to thank the management at 98.5 The Sports Hub and the Bruins organization for their trust in me. I am fortunate to be working alongside Bob Beers, one of the best analysts in the NHL. I’m really looking forward to this season and delivering the quality coverage our listeners have come to expect.”
Beers, a veteran radio commentator for 27 years, said he and Johnston were “looking forward to this new chapter.”
Sirrott, who has served as the Bruins radio announcer for the past seven seasons, was announced as the newest member of the NESN broadcast booth in August.
When NESN hired Sirott, Edwards noted that he had suddenly developed a dysphonia on air in February and suggested that his “voice may have become dull,” but said there was nothing medically wrong with his voice.
Announcing his retirement from the booth, Edwards said he was “no longer able to meet the standard I have set for myself – to give our fans, players, the Bruins organization and NESN the very best they deserve.”
Edwards has been calling games for NESN since 2005.
The Bruins will begin preseason play on Sunday, Sept. 22 against the New York Rangers before opening the regular season on Oct. 8 against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.
