STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Crews at the Castleton Corners shopping center were busy Saturday repairing and assessing damage caused by a crash Friday afternoon when a Hyundai sedan driven by a 70-year-old woman crashed into three stores.
Steve Rubin, owner of Todd Hill Wine & Liquor, said he hasn’t yet fully estimated the cost of repairs, but that police say the driver “lost control of the vehicle,” causing damage to his storefront, two lottery vending machines and full shelves of merchandise.
“I wasn’t here so I don’t really know,” Rubin said. “Thank God she didn’t kill anybody, that’s the most important thing.”
An NYPD spokesman did not respond to a request for comment Saturday but told the Advance/SILive.com on Friday that no crime was suspected in the incident, which occurred at about 2:33 p.m. Friday at 754 Manor Road.
Emergency personnel told the Advance/SILive.com on Friday that one person was injured in the incident, but a city Department of Buildings (DOB) spokesperson said Friday night that four people were injured in the incident.
A DOB spokesman said the three affected businesses — a Todt Hill Wine & Liquor store, a Chase Bank branch and a SuperFresh supermarket — did not suffer structural damage, so the agency did not issue eviction orders.
A Chase Bank spokesman said the branch will be closed Saturday for repairs, will remain closed as usual on Sunday and is expected to reopen on Monday.
Superfresh did not respond to a request for comment Saturday, but the store appeared to be open for business around 10:30 a.m. Customers were seen entering and exiting the liquor store.
Paramedics took the driver to Richmond University Medical Center in stable condition, an NYPD spokesman said.
