As the legendary department store Macy’s enters its 167th year of business, the retailer has struggled with internal accounting discrepancies, declining sales, and attempts to reinvent its brand. RetailDive.com reports that activist shareholders want Macy’s to divest from capital spending and close Bloomingdale’s stores while adopting a business model similar to Dillard’s.
According to USA Today, Macy’s announced in its 2024 financial results conference that it will close 65 stores by the end of the year, and approximately 150 stores by February 2026. The retailer plans to focus on improving the customer experience in its remaining stores.
