A US soldier who was injured while delivering aid to Gaza on President Biden’s failed floating pier in the spring succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, CNN reported on Monday.
Sergeant Quandarius Devon Stanley, 23, was one of three U.S. service members injured May 23 while working on the temporary floating pier that Biden announced with great fanfare during his March State of the Union address. It was a person.
The other two soldiers suffered minor injuries and returned to work after the incident, but the Pentagon said the incident was not related to the fighting.
Mr Stanley suffered serious injuries and was receiving long-term treatment. The young soldier’s obituary listed him as a native of Columbia, South Carolina.
“Sergeant Quandarius Stanley was a well-respected front-line leader of the 7th Transportation Brigade Expeditionary Squadron (TBX), particularly during its mission to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.” said Col. John “Eddie” Gray, the unit’s commander. CNN on Monday.
“We continue to provide support to his family during this difficult time. Our entire force mourns with his family.”
The $230 million pier is a visual example of how the United States is helping humanitarian aid flow into war-torn areas as Israel searches for Hamas terrorists in Palestinian enclaves. It was intended to be. But due to “wild weather and high waves,” the pier was only operational for 20 days.
The White House expected there would be enough food to feed an estimated 1.5 million Palestinians for three months.
However, a report released in August by the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Office of Inspector General (OIG) found that the pier ultimately served less than a third of the amount it provided to about 450,000 Palestinians. It was abolished on July 17th.
The same report found that Biden rushed onto the temporary pier prematurely, despite urgings from multiple federal aid officials.
The president built the pier as a way to allay concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza as far-left Democrats pressure the Harris-Biden administration to end support for Israel’s war against Hamas.
“This temporary jetty has the potential to significantly increase the amount of humanitarian assistance.”
We’re going into Gaza every day,” Biden told lawmakers.
But the report said there was little implementation planning before Biden’s announcement, and officials at the State Department and Defense Department were busy responding to the order.
The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
