LOCKPORT — The Parkersburg News and Sentinel and the Marietta Times held their 70th annual Cookbook Contest tasting event Wednesday at the Lockport Church of Christ.
This year’s cookbook theme is: “Create an international atmosphere at home.” Contestants were asked to prepare items in one of three categories: appetizers and add-ons, national entrees, or globetrotting goodies in the dessert category.
The contest judges included Kiki Angelos, Jess Mancini, Christina Meyer, Amy Phelps, and Mrs. Joseph C. Snyder.
Out of 76 recipes submitted, 12 recipes were selected to be judged in the contest. One of those selected was Sherry Noland, who said she loves entering cookbook contests. Her recipe was an apple, blackberry, and walnut pie. All the fruit and walnuts in the pie are locally sourced, and the apples are grown at Lane’s Farm, an orchard in Ohio. Everything else is owned by her family, who spend the season gathering fruit as it ripens on the farm and collecting and cracking walnuts in their driveway.
Noland said she loves tinkering with recipes and the contest is an outlet for that.
“I like picking things up and experimenting.” said Noland. “Sometimes I try it a couple of times and tweak and change it until I get it to my liking.”
The grand prize winner will receive a $500 Piggly Wiggly gift card and will be announced when the cookbook is released on November 17th.
