It’s easy to get taken over by the commercialism of the Christmas season. But over the years, I’ve found that the simple things are often the most meaningful. While store-bought gifts are certainly a good option, homemade gift ideas are usually budget-friendly and a great way to give a customized gift.
We also (most of the time) value experiences more than material gifts.
There are so many great gift options for DIY homemade gifts. We hope you will consider giving a gift this way. Below are some of my favorite homemade gift ideas and suggestions for simple gift baskets. Whether you want to put it under the Christmas tree or stuff it in a stocking, homemade Christmas gifts are easy to give to friends and family.
Why make DIY Christmas gifts?
Modern society is full of things everywhere. I’ve heard that toys, jewelry, and other goodies from Santa can make Christmas fun. Thoughtful gifts like simple DIY projects are an easy way to not only save money but also make Christmas more special.
There’s no need to beat yourself up if you don’t have time to make a homemade gift. It’s important to spend quality time with your loved ones. If you’re looking for last-minute gifts to buy, check out my gift guide for the whole family. This post is also full of great ideas in our gift guide for her.
We’ve divided our homemade Christmas gift ideas by recipient type (grandparents, kids, men, etc.) so you can easily find something perfect for everyone on your list. However, there’s a lot of crossover, and some DIY projects in one category may be perfect for others on your list as well.
Don’t forget to gift wrap! You can decorate plain paper gift bags. Ask the kids to help make markers or stickers (if they’re grandparents). If you’re feeling really crafty, make your own reusable cloth gift bags that you can use year after year.
christmas decorations
While making handmade presents, why not try making your own Christmas decorations as well? You can also find inexpensive home decor items at local thrift stores or make your own. This DIY garland is made from natural materials such as pine, cranberries, and dried oranges. Or try our burlap garland tutorial using ribbon and twine. I also made some burlap wreaths to decorate the front door.
How about some naturally scented cinnamon pine cones for table decoration?
And don’t forget the Christmas cards! Every year, I bribe my kids to wear matching outfits for their Christmas photo that goes on their annual Christmas card. If you’re crafty, handmade Christmas cards and gift tags are also great.
