Chennai:
Greater Chennai police recovered the sovereignty of 100 people in gold and luxury cars from Gunana Sekaran, a biryani vendor arrested in connection with sexual assault of an engineering student at Anna University on December 23, 2024.
The investigation revealed that Gnanasekharan was also involved in multiple thefts.
According to police sources, he confessed to stealing seven homes in Chennai’s Palikaranai region.
The stolen money was said to have been used to buy luxury cars, but the stolen jewelry was sold to fund his biryani business and lend a luxurious lifestyle.
Following the confession, police tracked and seized 100 gold sovereignty from two dealers in Chennai.
Gnanasekharan is currently in police custody for further questioning after the Alandur Court granted a three-day remand in connection with the theft case.
He was first arrested in an Anna University sexual assault case on December 25, 2024, where he allegedly attacked a female student and attacked her in a remote area of campus.
After his arrest, he was detained under the Goondas Act, based on the recommendations of the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The incident sparked political controversy, with Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Anamarai staged the protest outside his residence in Coimbatore.
He whipped six times to represent what he described as a deteriorating law and order situation.
Anamarai also announced a 48-day fast and pilgrimage to the six sacred homes of Lord Murugan as part of the protest. He criticized Tamil Nadu police, who allegedly leaked an FIR in an incident in which unintentionally exposed the identity of the 19-year-old victim.
He further accused police of not including Gunanazekaran on the state’s “rough list” despite being involved in multiple criminal cases.
Anamarai argued that this was due to the DMK controlling the accused with the “link.”
He presented evidence suggesting that Gnanasekharan is a DMK function, claiming that the ruling party is trying to distract attention from the issues of state law and order by promoting a narrative of north-south disparity between the north and south. .
